Both Sergeant Luther and Ron were taken aback.

“Matt, calm down. Everything’s ok. Here, have some water.” Ron said.

Matt, panic-stricken, gulped the whole glass of water. Beads of sweat were dripping down his face. A few minutes back he had seen flashing pictures of Sergeant Luther walking down that door and inquiring about the incident; there he was, standing in front of him. Matt was bewildered. Sliders of pictures in front of his eyes didn’t make sense to him. Familiar and unfamiliar voices were banging inside his head.

Matt felt excruciating pain, almost tearing him apart. He had seen flashes of Sgt. Luther and Ron talking about taking his statement outside the room. It was all unprecedented for Matt. He was not able to comprehend what was going on.

“Do you need a doc Matt?” asked Luther. “What’s going on? We are here, don’t worry, alright.”

“Nothing Sergeant,” said Matt still reeling under pain. “My head feels like it will blast off.” He hadn’t seen Sgt. lately. Ron had introduced him to Sgt. at a party a few months back. Matt knew he was a good guy, highly disciplined, and passionate about his work. There was nothing eerie about his presence, and Ron was also there. Matt felt safe.

“That’s probably because of the surgery. You are still recovering Matt,” assured Sgt. “Anyways, I am here to take your statement, but if you want I can come back later?” asked Luther.

“No sergeant, I’m good. How can I help?” said Matt in a low painful voice.

“Matt, any information regarding the incident would help at this moment. Ron has already given us his statement. He was in the line of fire, so maybe you saw or observed anything that night? Inzaghi’s car number plate? how many men were with him? their appearance, or anything else?” inquired Sgt. Luther, as Ron stood beside Matt’s bed.

“Let me try,” said Matt forcing his memory. He waited for a while and then spoke. “I guess there were three men. One of them was wearing a blue coat and had a cowboy hat on. He was smoking and never came out of the car the whole time. The other two were wearing black suits. They were the ones who opened fire at us. One was black with a beard, and the other one was white, blonde.” Matt told, writhing in pain.

“That’s pretty good, Matt. Were you able to see their faces? Can you identify them? Will you be able to help us with their sketch?” asked Luther

“I can try but I’m not sure.” Matt felt vertigo.

“No issues Matt. I will come back later. Take some rest now, and thanks for the inputs.”

Luther looked at Ron and then left the room patting Matt on the shoulder. Ron too left shortly after asking Matt to rest.

Ron was elated to know that Matt was out of danger. He thought of Jesus after so many years. He had lost faith in “HIM” when he lost his parents. A visit to the Church every Sunday in search of peace and to pray for a good life was once his routine. But after his parents’ death, he was reluctant. He had given up on the superpower. Ron learned to live with pain over time and gathered the strength to fight the world on his own. Matt was now his biggest support, as well as his biggest weakness. Ron felt alone in the last couple of days. He felt weak, broken, and was not able to fight his way out of this mess. He prayed for Matt’s life, giving himself another chance.

Fortunately, everything was under control now. Who knows, this could be a start for him to go back to “HIS” arms after so many years.

A couple of days passed. Matt was advised to be in the hospital for a few more days. Ron was happy with Matt’s recovery but was boiling inside to avenge Matt’s misery. He wanted Inzaghi. He craved for Inzaghi’s blood.

Ron had taken leave from duty to be with Matt. Drowned in guilt and conscience, he wanted to take care of his friend. He wanted to correct his mistake. Ron ensured that Matt was provided the utmost care. He ensured that Matt was given medicines at the right time, that a doctor was always present when Matt needed, and that food was provided to him on time.

The other day he wanted to talk to Matt but something inside was holding him back. Ron always thought he had the strength to face any situation, but this was painful and hurting.

He needed to vent out in front of Matt. He was starting to experience unease. But, finally, he gathered some courage.

“Hey Matty, how are you doing?” Ron said with a heavy voice and sat beside Matt’s bed on a stool.

“I’m okay, just the head stuff, the pain,” Matt replied as he tried to pull himself up to sit.

“Easy!” said Ron as he helped Matt. “I can understand,” Ron regrouped his strength. “I wanted to say I’m sorry. I’m sorry for all of this.” Ron tried to stop his emotions. He wanted to express more, but that was not his way. He had always avoided showing his vulnerable side to anyone.

Matt knew Ron very well and understood what was going on inside him. He spoke instantly.

“It’s cool man. Not your fault. You were doing your job.” Matt continued. “But, I’m angry with you for one reason. If I would have been killed, I would have died without getting married, and then I would have haunted you like hell.” Matt chuckled. “And you would have lost a good cook.”

Ron smiled. Matt was like this. He could make anyone smile, in any situation. Leaving everything aside, Ron hugged Matt but didn’t say anything.

“You pathetic piece of shit,” said Matt, feeling content.

“I need to go and get some medicines. I’ll be right back,” Ron informed Matt and left the room.

Matt knew it was hard for both of them to express their emotions, and both were fragile without one another.

Matt was lost in these thoughts when an excruciating pain hit him. He clutched his head and shouted for help. He tried to reach for the door but fell due to the unbearable pain. Ron had a similar feeling after his surgery. Thousands of unknown voices started to cloud his head again, but one voice that he filtered out made him nervous.

“I need detective Ron Sniper, you understand, I need him dead.” He could see pictures of a man giving the order to kill Ron. There were 3 men. Matt had seen them somewhere. A few seconds and he finally recognized the men. He had a feeling; the pictures and voices meant something. A sense of fear and panic dawned on him as soon as he saw the next flash. In no time, he started shouting frantically. “I need a phone.” A nurse quickly arrived and saw Matt on the floor screaming in pain and clutching his head.

“Sir, calm down. Let me get you back on the bed.” said the nurse in an alarmed voice and helped Matt.

“I need to call my friend. It’s urgent. I need a phone. Get me a phone.” shouted Matt.

‘Ok, ok, I’ll give you my phone, but first lie down.” said the nurse as she helped Matt on the bed.

Without thinking much, she gave her cellphone to Matt. Matt immediately dialed Ron’s number with trembling fingers. Ron did not pick up.

“Pick up the damn phone,” Matt mumbled and dialed again. Matt was panicking. He was about to hang up the second time when Ron finally responded from the other end.

“Hello..<Bam>” a bullet shot cracked the ear of Matt and deafening silence followed.

“Ron…Ron…Ron….” Matt shouted and looked at the nurse in horror.
